Abstract
This study examines whether the international monetary system is becoming more diverse while the U.S. dollar remains its main currency. It compares the euro area, China and Russia in five fields, first reserves and safe assets, second international finance, third trade and invoicing, fourth regional influence, and fifth, payment systems. The paper is based on academic research and official information available as of 31 October 2025. These findings show that the dollar remained the leading currency in global reserves, foreign exchange trading and international finance, and continued to provide liquidity during financial crises. The euro's share in reserves and in finance is significant, while there is no single, large European market for shared safe assets. China has begun using the renminbi more extensively in commerce and cross-border transactions, but capital controls and restrictions on market access limit the renminbi's wider use. Digital currencies and tokenised payment systems provide new avenues for transferring payments. They do not dictate on their own which currencies are kept as reserves or those borrowed. Dollar-backed stable coins could bring the dollar to more places. The evidence does not show that one currency is replacing another across all three cases. Instead, it shows different patterns of currency diversification.
